March 2022 NorCal Club Newsletter

Dear fellow alums,

Time is flying by—can you believe it’s already March?! Thank you to those of you who joined us at our recurring events in February: the mentorship group hosted by Jean Han ’87 and the book club organized by Hannah Fairbanks ’03. A special shout out to those of you who met up (in person, hooray!) for a gorgeous walk with Leah Hellerstein ’08 along the Bay Bridge Trail to celebrate Mary Lyon’s birthday. We had fun swapping Mount Holyoke stories, sharing memories, and being in community with alums from classes 1970 to 2013! We’re hoping to still gather for an in-person tea sometime in the coming months—stay tuned.

In addition to the International Women’s Day Happy Hour meetup hosted by the Club’s Recent Alum Chair Olivia Lucas ’18 next week, the Club is excited to bring some more exciting events to you in April, such as a special pole dancing class for local BIPOC alums, the next meeting of our NorCal Book Club (we’ll be reading When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka, along with a companion book, a graphic novel by George Takei entitled They Called Us Enemy), a horseback trail ride at Folger Stables co-hosted with the Club of the Peninsula, and more.

BOOM (Building on Our Momentum) Conference

The College’s BOOM conference is scheduled for March 29, 2022. BOOM is an annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) learning symposium featuring a series of events. The event incorporates the voices and experiences of students, faculty, staff, and alums. Sessions are designed by members of the community for the entire community and will meet participants where they are in their learning and comfort in engaging in sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The 2022 programming will offer several sessions open to alums. Keep your eyes out for more information from the College.

Pay Your Dues

Many thanks to those of you who have paid your dues and/or become Lifetime Members so far in 2022. If you want to pay membership dues for the 2021-2022 year or become a Lifetime Member, please do so here: MHC Club of Northern CA Membership Dues. If you prefer to pay by check, please email us. Additionally, if your company offers corporate matching or incentives for volunteering or being a part of a non-profit organization, we are happy to work with them to find ways to financially support our Club.

Join the Board

We want you! For those interested in being more involved with the Club, please consider joining our fantastic board. We welcome alums from our entire Northern California region, not just the Bay Area. Our Board meetings are via Zoom even in non-pandemic times, so location truly doesn’t matter. We would love to have representation from throughout our incredibly large region!

We are especially looking for someone to fill our Communications Chair position. If you are a savvy social media maven, can write compelling newsletters like the one you’re reading right now, want to build community with local alums, and stay connected to the College, this is a great role for you.

The next term begins July 1, 2022. Please peruse the board descriptions and if any open positions spark your interest, reach out to us by email or fill out this Statement of Interest. We’re always looking for fresh perspectives and look forward to hearing from you.

Let’s Connect

We aim to support alums in Northern California by cultivating a community that is connected, informed, and involved in the life and work of the College. As we continue planning for 2022, please share with us what types of events, programs, and resources may best support you at this time or any which you may wish to offer. Any feedback or suggestions are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Email us or fill out this form to get started.

Our very best wishes,

– The Board
